Eight, By the Sea

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who wanted to see the ocean for her eighth birthday. So she got on a bus with her friends, paid the fare (one sand dollar) and took off.

BEEP! BEEP! "Next stop: Oysterville," said the bus driver.
Unfortunately, the bus couldn't take them all the way to the water. "Schools of fish are always trying to get on for a field trip," the bus driver explained, "and they are far too soggy.

So the friends had to walk the rest of the way to the beach.
"But where IS it? We must explore!"

Finally, through the tall grass, they saw some seagulls and heard the crashing of waves.
"There it is!" cried Taylor. "The OCEAN!"

 Morgen was delighted!

She immediately waded into the ocean's shore...

...only to find it FREEZING cold, so she jumped right out and into the air!

Micah was still trying to find his way through the tall grass....

(...he thought it tickled his nose...)

...until Taylor found him and showed him the way out!

Feeling the cold water, Micah exclaimed, "I'm going to be BRAVE!" He hiked up his shorts and ran straight into the oncoming surf. What a brave little boy, indeed!

Their big sister apprehensively watched from up in the tall grass. She wasn't sure she wanted to venture into that cold, cold water with her siblings.

But the salty ocean air, the sound of seagulls and the water crashing onto the sand exhilarated her senses until she couldn't help but to come out of hiding.

She paused momentarily, as if to unknowingly reflect the Birth of Venus itself...

...and lept for joy into the frigid surf!

Korah was very pleased to be at the ocean's edge.

Back and forth, back and forth, they ran with the tide....

...until it was time to line up and travel back from whence they came.
It was time for some birthday cake!

HAPPY 8TH BIRTHDAY, MORGEN!

(Editor's note: it's amazing to me that I can lay down the strangest-looking cakes, so far from my cake-decorating fantasies, and all the children ooo and ahhh, salivating with forks poised at the ready. Maybe it's because cake is such a novely around here, or maybe it's because children have simple, joyful hearts and I ought to take a lesson. Either way... they heal my perfectionist spirit with their cheerful ones.)

Two things to notice here: one, that Noble is apparently trying to put cake directly into his stomach, thereby fitting his entire fist into his mouth. And secondly, notice the little friend in the foreground. Morgen and her school pal she brought along, found these fuzzy little guys and invited them to the party!

"We're here!"
Hmph. Party crashers.

Taylor always writes the funniest cards.

Then... how do you burn off a sugar high when it's dark and rainy outside and you're stuck inside a beach house? STAIR SURFING!

This is where mommy turns a blind eye. It looks like someone's ankle is about to break here.

This is a laughing face, believe it or not.
They've never had so much fun smooshing into each other!

One last family photo around the birthday girl before we leave.

You are so loved, Morgen-girl! May God bless you big, this ninth year of life!

Homeboy Fatherz Day, yo

Having a pre-teen in this e-generation makes you do things like this:

[This video played automatically whenever Vonderhaus was pulled up, and I didn't know how to change it! So from now on, you can see it HERE if you need to be reminded of our Father's Day antics. Thanks. Peace out.]

Happy Father's Day, David!

Karma Bites Back And It Tastes Like Chocolate

The backstory:

Last night I went grocery shopping after the kids went to bed.  I got home late and tired so I threw the cold stuff in the fridge and went to sleep.  This morning, I had to drag myself out of bed at the crack of dawn to take the dog to get neutered.  Then I meet Dave at school, we switch cars, he goes to work and I go home...

I'm in one of those snobby-mom moods (you probably don't know what I'm talking about because I'm the only one who has these, I'm sure) and I'm realizing I had some helpers putting away the rest of the groceries this morning while I was away, and they obviously weren't aware of my brilliant master plans on how such things are done to maximize efficiency, stewardship and space conservation!  The Control Freak Locomotive has leaped the tracks!

And this is the thought that grumbles out of my mouth:
"No one does my job right."
Since my thoughts are synonymous with Facebook status updates I immediately drop what I'm doing and head to the computer to immortalize my bitter narcissism.  Facebook, my computer, or maybe God himself thinks this is a bad idea and saves me from myself; it won't post.  So I get up, turn around and take 3 steps to the kitchen to find this:

And then he started to rub his eyes... as I type this, it's still oozing out of his nose and tear ducts...

It looks like I don't do my job that well, either!

Keepin' it real,
Wendy

Reindeer

Micah: "Dada, I only want you to get me Reindeer!"

Daddy: "Reindeer?"

Micah: "Uh-huh!"

Daddy: "How many Reindeer?"

Micah: "Just REINDEER!"

Daddy: "Why do you need Reindeer?"

Micah: "Because every time it's raining and I go outside, Ms. Mello says I need REINDEER!"

Gum Wall

I'll be going back in time here once I get my flux capacitor fixed, to talk about some fun and important things we've been up to.  But for now, just feast your eyes on this fabulous Gum Wall in Seattle.

Note: THIS IS NOT FREE CANDY! (Name that movie)

Zoo Day!

Micah was SO excited about his school's zoo day.  Even though it was on a Saturday, he thought he was going to ride the bus with his class and be there with all his friends.  Actually, it was a safety awareness day and half the city's school system was given a free ticket.  Safety Awareness Day...a perfect day to take all five kids to the zoo by myself...

Photo-op in the Eagle's Nest... not happening.

Micah checkin' out the River Otter.  He was pretty excited that it swam so close to him!

WHAT is going on here with that baby's face?!

Noble said "Dah!  Dah!  Dah!"  Which means "dog".  Close enough!

Eww!  I swear I did NOT know he was doing that until I looked at the picture.  Gross.
But he really liked those lil' doggies.

See?  Excited!

Woah!!  Help us!  Our canoe is tipping over!!

And then we came to what turned out to be the kids' favorite exibit: the Big Green Field.

We had a little tangerine break.

I finally got to see the baby elephant...
...and the Predators of the Serengeti!  RAAWR!!

Silly kids!

Gnome Tuesday

One day I had an unfortunate run of verbosity and accidentally promised the children that I would hide a little gnome figurine somewhere in our house every Tuesday, "just like Trader Joe's" for them to find when they got home from school. As a reward for finding it, also just like Trader Joe's, I would procure a prize, preferably in the form of fruit leather.

Today, being the serendipitous alignment of Gnome Tuesday, Spring Break and Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's, we took hiding the Gnome to new extremes, and ventured out on a grand quest to hit up all the B & J's we could stomach, dragging our little bearded friend with us.

The first stop was special because Daddy met us there between jobs. He even saved us a parking spot right next to the door so we could go in shifts and let Noble sleep in the car. And since we were hanging out at the car, I think we even forgot to pay for parking, so that was free, too!

Taylor found the Gnome!

Next we parked up by the library so we could take the MAX to the next scoop shop. We debated over which to do first: library or ice cream? We were way too excited; the answer was a resounding "ICE CREAM!!"

Can you find the Gnome?

Oh the sights to see downtown! I love taking the kids downtown; they are so astounded and amused by the crazies in this world. Take, for instance, the guy telling Noble, "no screaming! We don't need that. We don't need that. No screaming..." over and over, and then pretending to shoot him with his fingers. Woah!

And then we ran into the Statue Man, and he was actually doing stuff!

Micah was completely enthralled.

I personally like to pretend he's not there. Something about gawking at statues that may or may not be looking back at me kinda creeps me out. What amuses me about this photo is that just a few years ago, Morgen wouldn't let any dog get near her, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't even know this big one is standing right next to her.

Then we went to the Library and let Noble stretch his legs a little. He was very excited about that (or on a sugar high, it's hard to tell)... and looky! Noble found the Gnome! He likes the library, too.

"My rope is getting too tight. Can we stop now?"

Noble was in love with this little guy for one whole wait in line. And then the inevitable happened...

...which must be bad luck, because then I locked my keys in the car!

And while we waited for the locksmith, the kids burned off some energy running up and down some stairs, wherein Micah bit it hard, Taylor bruised his foot and Noble got filthy dirty. I found some free "Stress Relief" tea sample to sip while I kept my eye on the whole ordeal.

Now, we don't go out for adventures like this very often (on purpose), but when we do, these little snafus are just par for the course. This is life, and we roll with it!

After that we ate lunch, and some of us took naps.... Last stop, and we're getting a little loopy!

I told them, "OK, nobody close your eyes!" So Micah closed his eyes and pretended to sleep. Ahh, these kids make me giddy!

A little dairy, a little gluten, perhaps a little corn? Mmm!

Everyone: "I FOUND THE GNOME!"

I love that bumper sticker on the cone: IF IT'S NOT FUN, WHY DO IT? That pretty much sums up our day!!
